Retaining Walls in Freehold, NJ

Block retaining walls that hold soil, level yards and frame patios. Serving Freehold homeowners — owner-led by Manasses Ribeiro, NJ HIC #13VH10566200.

Retaining Walls for Freehold homes

We work in both Freehold Borough and Freehold Township — from older homes near downtown to township neighborhoods off Route 9 and Route 33 where pool decks and big patios are the norm.

We work across Freehold, including Freehold Borough and Freehold Township.

Built for Freehold ground

What's behind and under a wall decides how long it lasts. For retaining walls in Freehold, we check the soil and the slope at the estimate, then size the footing and plan the drainage stone and pipe for your site.

A retaining wall holds soil back so you can use more of your yard. That can mean a level lawn, a raised patio, or steps up a slope that used to wash out every spring. A wall only looks good for the long run if what’s behind it is built right.

How we build retaining walls

  • Footing. We excavate to firm soil and compact a level stone footing. The first course sits below grade.
  • Drainage first. We backfill with clean drainage stone, not the soil we dug out, and add perforated pipe where water needs a way out. Water pressure is what pushes walls over.
  • Setback and courses. Segmental blocks interlock with a slight backward lean, and every course is checked for level.
  • Caps. Caps are glued down for a finished edge that doesn’t shift.

Where retaining walls make sense

  • Sloped backyards where you want a flat lawn or patio
  • Raised patios and pool decks
  • Driveways cut into a grade
  • Hillside steps, like the curved set in our gallery
  • Wooded lots where erosion is eating the yard

For low decorative walls around planting beds or a patio, see garden and seating walls.

FAQ

Retaining Walls in Freehold: common questions

Why do retaining walls lean or bulge?

Almost always it's water. Wet soil behind a wall is heavy, and freezing makes it push harder. That's why we backfill with clean drainage stone and add drain pipe where the site needs it, instead of putting the dug-out soil back.

Do I need a permit or an engineer?

Taller walls, or walls that hold back a driveway, a structure or a steep slope, can require engineering and a permit, depending on the town. We tell you at the estimate if your wall falls into that category.

Can a retaining wall be part of a patio or pool area?

Yes. Raised patios and pool decks on sloped yards often need a wall. You can see one on this page holding the slope beside a pool deck.

Do you work in Freehold Borough and Freehold Township?

Both. The borough tends to have older homes on smaller lots; the township has larger lots, pools and newer developments. We work in both regularly.

Can you redo the patio around my pool?

Yes. We remove the old deck, rebuild the base and install pavers pitched away from the water, working around coping, skimmers and drains. You can see several pool decks in our gallery.

Do you handle long driveways?

Yes. Long driveways need careful grading and a consistent base along the whole run. We build them in pavers, concrete or asphalt, often with Belgian block edges.
